As it turned out, conventional wisdom “Opera is not the same” shared not only quite a large number of browser users but also developers – in the end, they have founded a new company, Vivaldi Technologies, and started to create “dream browser”. In January 2015 was presented the first test Assembly of Vivaldi, and now he saw light build, which the developers call “beta candidate” is already not alpha and not a technical preview, and the version on which the user can form an impression about the appearance and functionality of the product.
Interface and functionality
Vivaldi outwardly is absolutely not similar to the old “Opera” resembles the Microsoft Edge – the same “flat” style interface of Windows 10 and the relatively large tab. However, it has its own unique feature – the toolbar and tab the active tab colored in color, which is the main (from the point of view of the browser) to open it in pages (blue for Facebook, cyan for Twitter, orange for Google, etc.). Blank page colors “hat” browser Vivaldi in the original color – bright red.
The solution is, frankly, ambiguous – if soothing colors are perceived well, shriek-bright, contrast, distracting from the overall style (especially if the color scheme of the website generally calm, and selected for “painting” the color bar is used in minimal quantities). However, this feature, if desired, can be disabled in the settings, after which Vivaldi is even more similar with Edge.
For each tab has a preview of the open pages when you hover the cursor over their tabs, and if you pull the mouse over top of the address bar, you can “pull” a hidden panel beneath the tabs contain thumbnails of the sites.
Frequently visited sites can “fix” for them is created on the left mini-tab icon website.
Except the button open a new tab, the top panel also has a button that causes a list of closed tabs. In the navigation pane, except the usual buttons “home”, “reload/stop”, “forward” and “back” are also “return” which opens the first visited on the website page, and “transition” – it opens the page that the browser view is next accessed (for example, the following page in search results or in the news).
However, while this feature doesn’t always work, and then on some sites the “transition” remains inactive, and the “return” works as “back”, ie opens not the very first one visited on this website page and the previous one.
The process of loading the website well visualized in the address bar there is progress bar, while the right part shows the amount of downloaded data and number of elements.
Unlike other browsers based on Chromium, Vivaldi decided to make a separate search-line – as it was in “old” Opera (or even Firefox). By default, the browser comes with a set of search mechanisms, which can be edited in its settings. However, the address bar is actually also can be used for search – a simple request it will be sent to the search engine by default, and to use a different set in your browser search engine, quite prior to request to add the drive letter (g for Google, y for Yahoo and so on; the user can assign each mechanism any other letter).
Vivaldi the main menu is invoked by pressing the button with the logo of the browser in the top left corner; if desired, the user can switch to the classic menu, but it will “eat” the extra space adding in the top panel of one strip. The menu names, frankly, make impression rather some editor, not a web browser “File”, “edit”, “View”, “Tools” etc. (and in the “File” mainly contain paragraphs work with tabs in the “Edit” – clipboard, and in the “Window” is just a list of open pages, essentially duplicating the upper tab bar).
One of the most familiar UI element in Vivaldi is the sidebar (default is shown in the left part of the screen, but can be transferred and to the right) – it contains menus of bookmarks, a download Manager, until the missing mail client and the editor (the latter allows to create notes, copying text in open tabs; also, in notes you can add the web address to make screenshots of pages and files from the local disks). The user can also add their own items – just click “Add web panel”, insert the url of the site and its mobile version will be shown in the right panel of this menu. If the user doesn’t have a sidebar, you can hide it using the button on the status bar.
